History
Historians have traced pies back to Ancient Egyptians through the drawings that can be found etched on the tomb walls of Ramses II. Ancient Greeks went a step further and actually originated the pie pastry. The victorious Romans, after conquering the Greeks, brought home the recipes for making pies. After that the recipe for pie making slowly but surely spread across the world. It took centuries and a Kiwi right across the other side of the world to perfect this now popular takeaway.
Pies hold a special place in New Zealand lifestyle. Pies are served on all occasions, from sporting events such as rugby matches to formal functions like weddings. You can find them in bakeries, corner dairies, grocery stores, pubs and the menus of some of the finest restaurants. It's estimated that Kiwis eat a total of around 67 million pies per year.
